Intellectual Development

From learning to cut with scissors or hold a pencil to learning to share, take turns, and problem solve, these are developmental skills for preschoolers.

The early years are the time to build a strong foundation in all developmental areas. At Al-Iman Academy we design our curriculum to meet specific milestones in all domains of development and learning helps preschoolers establish behaviors and skills that will make them successful.

Play is an elusive concept, and it’s an essential part of life, not just childhood. But it is absolutely necessary for proper development in the formative years.

Play encourages all areas of proper development, from cognitive and physical to social and emotional. We design our curriculum in such a way that kids will learn the most important concept of sharing and problem solving skills.

Our Islamic teachings are implemented through the guidelines provided by Masjid Yusuf most trusted name in Greater Richmond VA. We use the guidance to promote Islamic teachings by planning motivating cross-curricular activities, which cater for the needs and interests of all children.

We encourage children to explore the teachings of Islam through all the areas of development set out in the curriculum. Our Islamic teachings cover:

Allah, His messengers, The Qur’an and all His creation;
The basic seerahs of some Prophets in Islam;
The five pillars of Islam;
The importance of Jummah;
Short Surahs from the Qur’an;
Short hadeeths pertaining to Islamic manners and etiquettes;
Daily and topic related du’as;
The celebration of all major Islamic events

At Al-Iman Academy we believe that a warm and nurturing atmosphere is the best environment for children to learn and grow. The environment is structured to provide skills which are the first step in the child’s academic life. The areas of development around which the curriculum is organized are as follows:

1. Spiritual: help children develop a love of Allah and who they are as Muslims.

2. Physical: help children increase their large and small muscle skills and feel confident about what their bodies can do.

3. Emotional: help children experience pride and self-confidence, develop independence and self-control, and have a positive attitude towards life.

4. Social: help children feel comfortable in school, trust their new environment, make friends, and feel they are part of the group.

5. Cognitive: help children become confident learners by letting them try out their own ideas and experience success, and by helping them acquire learning skills such as the ability to solve problems, ask questions, and use words to describe their ideas, observations, and feelings.

With representational abilities, children’s imaginations become boundless! They love pretend games and have a natural tendency to fantasize, experiment, and explore. They are fascinated with magic and struggle to distinguish between fantasy and reality. However, their creative drive ignites a desire to learn and supports intellectual development across all subjects. Thus, it is the perfect time to support the development of divergent thinking—where children generate unique solutions and make new connections without being tied to “the” one right answer or way of doing things

At Al-Iman we encourage creative problem solving: Ask your child open-ended questions that have no right or wrong. Encourage her to tell you why she thinks as she does (fostering creativity, cognition, and language development)

We Provide an array of experiences to build your child’s foundation of knowledge (e.g., go to museums, visit libraries, and explore different neighborhoods in your town).

Social Development

Children’s emotional well-being during their early years has a powerful impact on their social relationships. Children who are emotionally healthy are better able to establish and maintain positive relationships with adults and peers (Trawick-Smith, 2014). Consider some of the children in your own life and the different stages in their social-emotional development as they were growing up.

Preschool-age children are learning to talk about their feelings and the feelings of others. Social-emotional development, however, involves more than just expressing emotions. It entails taking turns, becoming independent in following routines, interacting more with peers, engaging in meaningful relationships with others, controlling emotions, and developing a positive self-image. These skills are crucial for children’s successful participation in school and home experiences and for their overall growth.
